Flowering from May through July, green flowers turn to brown/bronze seed heads and persist through the fall, a robust tuft forming sedge developing 2 foot wide clumps up to 3 tall, long narrow leaves less than wide, tolerates regular inundation with up to 6 inches, food for many bird species and mammals, host of several butterflies, skippers and moths including the Eyed Brown (Satyrodes eurydice) and the Mulberry Wing (Poanes massasoit), Salt tolerant , tolerate a wide range of soils (sand, silt, gravel, loam, clay), good for erosion control and Rain gardens.
