Majestic forest tree, flowers look like dark clusters along the branches as they open in early spring & are followed (on female trees) by large clusters of 2 long seeds (samaras) that hang on through early winter creating an interesting effect, dark green large compound leaves (more than a foot long) turn yellow to deep purple in fall, tree develops a broad crown, gray fissured bark, host plant for Baltimore (Euphydryas phaeton), Harvester (Feniseca tarquinius), & Tiger Swallowtail (Papilio glaucus) butterfly caterpillars, good nesting tree, rain garden tree, hard wood is used for all kinds of things including furniture, baseball bats & canoe paddles.
