A familiar and beautiful shade tree, red flowers in early spring (March-April) are favored by early bees, leaves with red petioles, lovely fall color (red of course!), fast growing and sturdy, attracts native and honey bees, host plant to many beautiful butterflies and moths including the Mourning Cloak (Nymphalis antiopa) Mourning Cloak (Nymphalis antiopa) and Cecropia (Hyalophora cecropia), Cecropia (Hyalophora cecropia), suitable for bonsai. State tree of Rhode Island!

Germination - Easy: Cold Stratify 8 weeks. note: seedlings susceptible to fungal attack - use sterile stratification media for best results.
