Racemes of 2 to 15 pale pink keeled pea-like flowers are born randomly at some of the leaf axils along the length of this clambering vine from late July through September, these flowers produce green seed pods pointed at both ends that are about 1.5 inch long and contain up to 4 (inedible) bean-shaped seeds, secondary self-fertile flowers are produced at ground/below ground level and produce fleshy edible pear-shaped fuzzy seed pods containing an edible bean-like seed, alternate trifoliate leaves with egg-shaped leaflets, found in low moist woodlands, likes sandy or loamy soil, fixes nitrogen, host plant for the Silver-Spotted and Gold-Banded Skippers (Epargyreus clarus and Autochton cellus), wildlife (including ring-necked pheasants and Bobwhite Quail) eat the buried edible fruits.
