A tall, narrow, ornamental clump-forming grass with 3" bronze to purplish or green seed heads from June through September, the stems & leaves are blue-green in summer with red tinges on the leaves as they mature, plants turn a rich russet in autumn providing good winter color, food plant for Common Wood Nymph (Cercyonis pegala), Arogos Skipper (Atrytone arogos), Cobweb Skipper Butterfly (Hesperia metea), Delaware Skipper Butterfly (Anatrytone logan) & Dusted Skipper Butterfly (Atrytonopsis hianna) butterfly caterpillars. Tolerates harsh conditions, salt tolerant, an important native forage grass of the prairie states.
