Purplestem Angelica Picture

A big, bold perennial which produces large, showy white ball-shaped clusters of flowers (June) which ripen into full seedheads, shattering in place and self-seeding where they are planted. Beautiful dark-green compound leaves look similar to enormous parsley on stout, hollow stems, which are often purplish and attractively speckled. Tolerates deer pressure, poorly-drained conditions, and occasional flooding. Host plant for Black Swallowtail (Papilio polyxenes) caterpillars, also attracts beneficial biological control insects which feed on normal garden pest insects. The shoots and young stalks of this plant have traditionally been used as a cooked vegetable. A great rain garden plant that requires a lot of space, also excellent along moist garden peripheries!
