Pawpaw

This native tree produces lurid maroon 1-2 inch flowers along the stems in early spring, pollinated flowers produce thick 5 inch long fruit that raccoons adore (if you want some for yourself - pick them when they are still green in late summer and let them ripen indoors, they are quite tasty, somewhat like banana custard), 6-12 inch drooping oval shiny leaves are very attractive on plants both young and old and turn lemon yellow in fall, food plant for Zebra Swallowtail Butterfly (Eurytides marcellus). likes acid soil, pyramidal shape at maturity. Our plants are young - Pawpaws have tap roots that do not like a lot of disturbance. Plant these with fertile, loamy soil & give them light shade for the first couple of years to help them establish.
