Often sold as an aquarium plant under the common name Dwarf Hairgrass, this species is actually in the sedge family, but is quite popular in the aquarium trade due to its short, dense, mat-forming growth habit in wet and underwater environments. In appearance, it resembles an attractive mass of very fine, grasslike leaves which are actually a collection of leafless stems. Greenish-brown flowers appear at the top of flowering stems between June and September, each turning to a single seed (achene), looking a bit like small beads at the top of the dense grasslike mass. Common and native throughout the continental US, this species can be found growing in sandy conditions, puddles, wet fields, and places where water has receded, like shallow lakeshores and marshes. It usually reaches its maximum height at around 2-4 inches, and has a very fibrous rhizomatic root system, which allows it to form dense clumps and which is also excellent for holding silty, sandy, or muddy soil in place in the wet environments where it tends to thrive.
