An attractive cool season bunch grass with ornamental rye-like flowers and seedheads, tolerant of clay, sandy soil, and occasional flooding. Excellent species for erosion control. Very attractive in borders, with a tendency to self-seed in place. Seeds are an important wildlife food for field mice and seed-eating birds, and parts of this plant may also be used as nesting material. Host plant for many species of skipper and satyr butterfly, good ornamental grass for rain gardens.
