Nodding clusters of globular reddish pink/purple flowers from April to July are stunning as are the dramatic pink upright plumed seed heads that follow and persist most of the summer, soft and hairy blue-green fern-like foliage, spreads by rhizomes and seed, great groundcover, semi-evergreen (taking on a reddish tinge in winter), does best in sunny dry conditions, must have well drained soil in winter, drought tolerant, tolerates a wide range of poor and thin soils (including sand, clay, and gravel) but will also grow well in rich loam, pollinated by bumble bees. A plant of high quality undisturbed prairies, open woods, & rocky upland meadows.
