Dense wands of small thistle-like purple flowers from August through September, leaves are linear and up to 1 foot at base of plant, likes fertile soil, good cut flower (often used in florists' shops), excellent nectar plant, attracts butterflies and hummingbirds, drought tolerant, moderately salt tolerant, good rain garden plant.
