Rare in many places and infrequently seen in the wild even where it can be found, this is an extraordinarily showy lily with up to 20 yellow-orange nodding flowers (Jun-Aug) atop an upright, single stalk with whorls of lance-shaped leaves. Produces seeds inside a dry capsule once the flowers have faded. Can sometimes be found along streambanks, wetland margins, or in moist meadows and along roadsides. Tolerates poorly-draining soil and occasional flooding, and has a preference for disturbed soil, however does not tolerate deer pressure well, and the corms may be eaten by voles. Flowers are a particular favorite of hummingbirds and bumblebees.
