An unassuming but attractive woodland rush of slopes and rocky areas. Flowers are interesting yellow, white, and brown balls (March-June) which turn to spiky brown spheres above grasslike, visibly hairy red-tinged leaves that grow together in a tuft. Tolerates clay, rocky soil, and sand, and generally tends to actually prefer poor soil, especially in well-drained areas like rocky wooded slopes. The common name "Hedgehog Woodrush" comes from the "spikes" on the leaves, which are visually obvious from a distance but are actually soft hairs: this plant looks spiky, but isn't.
