An upright plant with extraordinary showy flowers comprised of yellow and purple tubular flowers tucked into the base of large pink, purple, green and white whorled leaf-like bracts which themselves give the flower extra showiness (June-August). A really spectacular and slightly bizarre flower! Seedheads form along the stem as the season progresses, creating an interesting visual texture as winter arrives. Leaves are pale green and can be fragrant, although in our experience this species is generally not terribly aromatic. Tolerates drought, sandy soil, salt, and occasional flooding, and can often be found in sandy woodlands and near pond edges adjacent to the shore, tending to prefer fast-draining sandy soil and open areas without a great deal of competition. According to the Xerxes society, this species is of special value to honeybees, native bees, and bumblebees, as well as attracting predatory insects that prey on pest insect species (some very cool native, non-aggressive wasp species tend to really enjoy the flowers of this plant). Although technically a perennial, in our experience this species tends to act more like a biennial, although it will seed in readily when grown in ideal conditions.
