Large 3-4 inch wide lemon yellow flowers from May through August are very showy, this plant has no true leaves but consists of large flat oval pads which bear both fierce 1 inch sharp spines as well as small clusters of equally fierce short hair-like barbed spines, in late summer the barrel-shaped fruits turn reddish-purple & edible (if you know how to get around the spines!), well-drained soil is a must, salt tolerant.
