Common Cinquefoil Picture

A prostrate creeping plant with pretty yellow flowers (April-June) which turn to clusters of dry achenes as summer progresses, this species is usually found in degraded habitats, but will gladly grow in a number of different conditions. Leaves are five-parted (the reason for the name 'cinquefoil') and attractive, although quite low to the ground. A sprawling, branching plant which hugs the ground and roots readily at the nodes, common cinquefoil is tolerant of sand, clay, gravel, drought, occasional flooding, and degraded soil conditions. According to the Xerxes society, this species is of special value to native bees. It has also historically had several food and medicinal uses, but was generally considered only a famine food.
