A large, impressive tree known for its drought tolerance and hardiness, this is a particularly striking species of oak. Flowers are wind-pollinated tassels (April) which turn to very large acorns with mossy caps. Leaves are large and leathery, with rounded lobes. Bark is pale and very deeply-furrowed, and the tree's crown is broad and spreading (up to 70-80 feet across), creating a very majestic effect. Tolerates drought extremely well unless grown in compacted soil. Also tolerates very cold temperatures, lime, clay, and pollution, making it a reasonably good (if quite large) street tree. Extremely high value for wildlife, including turkeys, flying squirrels, chipmunks, insect-eating birds, woodpeckers, and many, many species of insect, including acting as a host plant for quite a few types of moths and butterflies such as Imperial Moths, Hairstreaks, and Duskywings. Reasonably fast-growing for an oak, and produces remarkably little acorn detritus underneath (in fact it may take up to 35 years to even begin producing acorns).
