Fertile culms produce drooping clusters of brown flower heads as early as May which persist as brown seeds heads all summer & into fall, upright hollow leaf-less stems can be 1/3 inch across at the base and gradually become more slender toward the tips, can tolerate standing water up to 12 inch deep, spreads rapidly by creeping rhizomes, somewhat salt tolerant, good vertical accent, clay & Black Walnut tolerant, good rain garden plant, wildlife food & nesting habitat.
