A tall species of open wet places including swales, marches, ditches, streambanks, and the shallow edges of lakes, producing attractive open seedheads with pale achenes from July-September. Leaves are slender and grasslike, creating an open, airy look. Tolerates flooding, poor soil, and clay. Excellent habitat for nesting birds such as red-winged blackbirds, and provides cover for many types of wildlife, including songbirds and waterfowl.
