A nectar-rich favorite of native bees, hummingbirds, and pollinators of all types! Flowers (May-July) are tiny, pink to dark red, and inconspicuous to humans, but draw an enormous number and variety of pollinators. Leaves are dark green and finely-toothed along a stiff upright stem. Rare in much of its range, this species tolerates sand, drought, occasional flooding, and wet conditions, often found near ponds and the banks of creeks, as well as along the edges of forests and fields. Traditionally used by the Iroquois for treating a variety of conditions, primarily skin conditions, and generally avoided by herbivores due to the acrid chemicals in the sap. Considered to be of special value to native bees by the Xerxes Society!
