A lanky annual vine which tends to form mats in thickets of disturbed areas. Small, star-shaped white flowers are subtle but attractive, blooming from August-September. Fruits are spiny and inedible, covered with sharp, brittle hairs that can easily come dislodged when handled, resulting in a (mostly) painless pincushion effect: handle fruits with caution. Fruits may also get caught in clothing and mammal fur. Leaves are maple-shaped, with sticky hairs covering the stem. Tolerant of pollution and fond of disturbed, moist areas. Flowers are a favorite of pollinators including native bees, although many species of insect may feed on different parts of this plant. Bur cucumber seeds in freely and can become rather pushy if left to its own devices, especially given its ability to climb and cover bushes, fences, and small trees
